Good morning to everyone! Genna and I are glad to be back home and are sorry we were unable to post while abroad. Turns out we didn't have the internet connection we had anticipated. Genna transported to Paris a very heavy and elaborate ipod charger :-)
Inspired by our trip, I am trying to collect titles to movies having to do with France in some way. They might take place there, be filmed there, have to do with some part of French history, geography or French culture. In particular we are interested in those having to do with Paris. We hope to watch them in order to "extend the experience" and learn some more in a fun way.
So far we have the following compiled by the Walkers, Genna and I:
French Kiss
Charade
How to Steal a Million
Marie Antoinette (with Norma Shearer)
Desiree
Scarlet Pimpernel
Day of the Jackal
Bourne Identity
Man in the Iron Mask
Three Musketeers
Gigi
Anyone have any more to add?
Love to all,
Karen

'Love In the Afternoon' takes place in Paris. The movie is kinda goofy, but Audrey's little Parisian apartment is so cute!
ReplyDeleteJust FYI, I found out that Desiree is not available on Netflix. I found pirated English/Chinese copies for sale on Amazon, or you can rent it for 24 hours from Amazon or download it to your computer for $9.99. From the preview it does not appear to put Napoleon in a good light but I shall have to see it.
ReplyDeleteI also have on my list the new Marie Antoinette with Kirstin Dunst. I didn't care to see it before but now it might be more fun.
Paris When it Sizzled made me want to drink poison, but it is indeed set in Paris (as the title indicates)
ReplyDeleteAmerican in Paris (ditto)
Silk Stockings (AWESOME!)
I'll try to think up some more!
Aaaaaack! I have now written out this list several times only to have the internet lock up. It looks like I may actually get it posted this time. Of course, now some of them were already suggested by Eleanor, but I'm not going over it again.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I missed some, so I'll keep thinking on it.
Paris films:
2 Days in Paris
Le Battement d'Ailes du Papillon
Irma la Douce
Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain
The Man Who Cried
Le Ballon Rouge
Paris - When It Sizzles
La Science des Rêves
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
Funny Face
Paris, Je T'aime
An American in Paris (I can’t believe you guys didn’t think of this one. For shame!)
Can-Can
Moulin Rouge
La Vieille Dame et les Pigeons (this one’s a short and it’s on youtube)
History of the World: Part 1 (okay so this one’s a big stretch, but there IS that one section about the French revolution!)
Un-Paris films:
La Cité Des Enfants Perdus
Les Triplettes de Belleville
Lili
The Little Prince
To Catch a Thief
The Count of Monte-Cristo
Henry V
Delicatessen
Cyrano de Bergerac (this one might take place in Paris, I’m not sure)
I definitely would recommend the modern Marie Antoinette, it's brilliant. Just prepare yourself for a less-than-brilliant performance by Miss Dunst and a seriously lacking storyline.
Oh! Hotel Chevalier by Wes Anderson. This one's a short as well and I think it only comes on the dvd of The Darjeeling Limited.
ReplyDelete(told you I'd forgotten some)
Wow, Rachael!! I've only seen a *handful* of the movies you mentioned! ::runs to expand Netflix queueueueue::
ReplyDeleteI would advocate for the Jose Ferrer 'Cyrano de Bergerac.' He has the most beautiful speaking voice in the history of theater and his performance as the titular hero made me bawl my face off.
Aunt Karen, while I can't speak to the historical accuracy of 'Desiree', I thought Napoleon was portrayed as a complex and appealing figure -- if not always entirely sympathetic. His defeat at the end was very depressing.
Now, I shall end this posting on a high note (ala Cloris Leachman): SCREEEEEEEEEECH!!!!
Janice, I would definitely recommend all of the films I listed. Some of them aren't as great as others, but I didn't list any I hated. *cough*DaVinciCode*cough
ReplyDeleteOh and don't forget all the Pink Panther films! (minus the new one, of course)
Viva la Rachael! Also: Viva la Netflix!
ReplyDeleteI want you all to know that my puppy, having finished his breakfast, is sitting at my feet patiently awaiting my attention.
Mmmm...power!
Talk of Hyacinth and Disney ("Forgive me a cruel chuckle... mmmpower...") reminded me: doesn't 'Aristocats' take place in Paris?
ReplyDeleteAnd, then, of course 'Anastasia' tells us that Paree holds the key to our hearts...
Oh gee, I can't believe I forgot those two... ACTUALLY, I can't believe the KWhites forgot Anastasia! Tsk tsk.
ReplyDeleteBeauty and the Beast also. Even though it only takes place in France, not Paris.
It was a very heavy ipod charger. :P
